Marafiki GLOBAL AIDS Ministry, Inc.
The mission of Marafiki is to provide food, shelter, medical care, education, a safe Christian living environment and loving support for children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS. (Rafiki means "friend" in Swahili, from which it derives its vision of extending God's unconditional love to ease the suffering of children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.)
In 1998, Marafiki began in Kenya. In 2005, through generous donations of friends in Columbus, Ohio, Rafiki purchased 5 acres of land. A farming project with 600 chickens, 24 pigs, 12 cows and 10 goats has been started, and the Rafiki farm now supports the orphanage. In June 2006, a water well was dedicated that provides clean water to the children and the members of the community.
God willing, the ministry will soon dedicate two dormitories, housing 100 kids, a permanent Medical Clinic, and a Dining Hall. This will be a milestone to the ministry since we will stop renting the facility that accommodates 32 children.
In 2007, Rafiki added more acres of land and now owns 10 acres. In September 2007, a major milestone was reached. The orphanage relocated from the rental place to the farm. Thanks be to God that the farm is now providing enough food for the children and able to sell some for education purposes.
Because of the political unrest in Kenya, the 2008 summer trip has been rescheduled for summer 2009. Please pray for the situation in Kenya.
Rosemary has completed her diploma in law, Agnes is at the University of Nairobi taking a course in Guidance and Counseling, Mary is at Menengai Nursing School and Lois is Daystar University taking a course in Mass communication. Currently, the ministry is supporting 20 students in high school paying all their tuition and another 80 children in elementary and Middle schools in Kenya.
