Ken & Linda Schmitt
With over 3 billion people, Asia encompasses almost half the population on the planet. Asia is characterized by rich ethnic diversity and a mosaic of religious and ethical thought that includes animism, Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Islam, Hinduism, Taoism, and Shintoism.
The SIL Asia area extends from Mongolia in the north to Indonesia in the south, from the western border of India to the Pacific Ocean on the east. SIL has government contracts or NGO status in Cambodia, China, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. We serve in other places through partnership and consultancies. SIL has strategic alliances in Asia - Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan - where we don't do language work but where we partner to mobilize for Bible translation and language development.
The church in parts of Asia is growing rapidly in numbers, strength and mission vision. A significant part of Ken and Linda's strategy is to work closely with Wycliffe Asia-Pacific to mobilize Asians for Bible translation and language development. Takashi Fukuda from Japan is Ken's Wycliffe counterpart.
Prayer Targets
- Please pray for a quick adjustment to life in Asia - big cities, lots of people, unreadable languages, $6 a gallon for gas.
- Pray for the frequent flights between the Manila office and their apartment in Bangkok.
- Pray for the ability to visit all the countries SIL serves in Asia this year.
- Having the message of God's love in the languages that speak to their hearts.
